In today’s digital age, the ease of sharing intimate images has created a new avenue for privacy breaches and non-consensual sharing, with serious consequences for victims.

This article explores the issue of men sharing explicit photos sent to them by women, focusing on the situation in Malta.

It is essential to emphasize that the blame lies squarely with those who violate trust, not the individuals who share their images in confidence. Non-consensual sharing of intimate images, often referred to as “revenge porn” or “image-based abuse,” is a problem that affects individuals of all genders. However, statistics reveal that women are disproportionately targeted, and men are frequently the culprits behind these violations of privacy.

What happens in Malta?
Sharing a private sexual photograph or video without the subject’s consent is a criminal offence. Those found guilty of such actions could face a prison sentence of up to five years, a fine of potentially €8,000, or a combination of both penalties.

WHAM tried to contact a police spokesperson to get to know the statistics with regard to the sharing of nude photos to see how common this occurrence is in Malta. However, unfortunately, we were told that, apparently, statistics are not kept with regard to particular reports of “revenge porn” and “image-based abused”.

The Emotional and Psychological Impact
The emotional and psychological consequences for victims of non-consensual sharing of intimate images are profound. Feelings of betrayal, humiliation, and emotional distress can persist long after the images have been removed from the internet. The focus should be on supporting and protecting the victims rather than stigmatizing them.

Educational Initiatives and Awareness
Addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach. In addition to legal measures, educational initiatives and awareness campaigns can help reduce the occurrence of image-based abuse. Promoting the importance of digital consent and respecting individuals’ privacy is vital in changing societal attitudes.

Conclusion
The non-consensual sharing of intimate images is a violation of trust, privacy, and human rights. It is essential to recognize that this issue affects individuals of all genders, but it predominantly targets women. Malta, like many other countries, has taken steps to address this problem legally, with pending court cases serving as a clear warning to potential offenders.

Above all, it is crucial to place the responsibility on those who violate privacy rather than on the individuals who share their images in confidence. The emotional and psychological impact of this breach of trust is profound, and supporting victims is a priority. Through legal measures, awareness campaigns, and educational initiatives, we can work toward a society where privacy is respected and digital consent is paramount.
