Paulina Dembska

If you live in Malta, I am sure you have heard of the horrific femicide of Paulina Dembska. If you haven’t yet heard of it, Paulina, a 29-year-old polish woman, was sexually assualted and killed by a man, on 2nd January 2022 at the Independence Garden, in Sliema. This news shook the whole nation and even more so women. It especially deeply affected a lot of women, both physically and emotionally because women’s deepest fears, that is, of being harassed or harmed by a man, turned into reality and they realised that it could have easily been them, their female relative or their female friend.Read More…

elle-evate

Women For Women Foundation assists vulnerable women in social and financial crisis on a daily basis – women who are poor or sliding into poverty, who may be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, who suffer from health problems, who may be at risk of violence, who are young or expectant mothers, or who have suffered a sudden accident or loss, leaving them in crisis. As a voluntary organisation, an internal framework as well as increased human resources were required to process the increasing amount of daily requests for support. For this reason, in March 2021, Elle-Evate was launched – a 12 month projectRead More…

breast cancer vaccine

The very first human trial testing a vaccine against triple-negative breast cancer is set to begin. As we all regretfully know, breast cancer is one of the most common yet deadly cancers out there. At the time of writing, breast cancer may only be prevented through mastectomy (a surgical operation to remove a breast), as it doesn’t respond to hormone or targeted drug therapies. Yet just last week, the Cleveland Clinic – a medical centre in the US – announced that it’s launching a ‘first-of-its kind’ human trial testing a vaccine shot designed specifically to prevent triple-negative breast cancer. Up until now, developments in triple-negativeRead More…

Maltese stuck in UK

Many Maltese citizens stuck in the UK are very annoyed and angry with the Maltese authorities because they have been told that they need to ask for permission to be allowed to visit their families in Malta unless they have all been vaccinated, especially since they now know that Covid numbers in Malta are up to 96 and these, we are told, are all due to unvaccinated tourists mostly students. So, these students were allowed to enter Malta without a vaccine certificate. Meanwhile in the UK numerous young Maltese children who go to school there and have finished school are being told they have to waitRead More…

pride 2021

Pride month is an entire month dedicated to celebrating LGBT+ rights, activism, and culture. Due to the COVID pandemic, Pride 2021 events have been cancelled or scaled down in many countries. However, this was not an obstacle to advocate for the rights of the LGBT+ community across the world. June 2019: ‘Two women, Melania Geymonat and her partner Chris say they were subjected to a homophobic attack and left covered in blood on the top deck of a London night bus as they were travelling to Camden Town’. BBC News October 2020: ‘30 transgender or gender non-conforming people have now been fatally shot or killedRead More…

Woman Allegedly Raped by Police Sergeant

Most of us have probably heard of a recent local case regarding a woman allegedly raped by police sergeant following theft claim. Many were those, both men and women, who took to social media to voice their thoughts and judgements about this case. I must say that throughout the years I’ve watched silently as female victims of rape and sexual assault were further subjected to public slandering and accusations following their decision to report the act. It takes so much strength and courage for a woman to report abuse, yet instead of being supported in bringing a perpetrator to justice, she is victimised further byRead More…

decriminalisation of abortion

Like you, I was brought up here in Malta and was very anti-decriminalisation. I still remember when living in London in the late 80s I met a friend of a friend who said she had had an abortion. I was horrified, I just could not understand how anyone could kill their baby. I remember watching debates on British TV about abortion time frames, they were debating if abortion should be legal until 12 weeks or later? Again, I was horrified, to me, that was a baby from day one. To me, it was not a discussion about the number of weeks, abortion was the killingRead More…
