part time nursing students

Earlier on this week, MUMN chief Paul Pace claimed that an average of 3 nurses are quitting their jobs at Mater Dei Hospital every week. Burnout, stress, and lack of new recruits seem to be contributing towards the problem. Meanwhile, nursing students following a degree on part time basis have been discriminated for the past 4 years. I write this with a heavy heart in the name of all part time students whose desperate pleas have been ignored for the past 3 years by parliament ministers, committees and organisations. Four years ago the possibility of following a Nursing Degree on Part Time Day basis wasRead More…

white cane

White Cane Safety Day is observed worldwide every 15th October. On this day we are called to celebrate the achievements of people with vision impairment and people who are blind, since the white cane happens to be a valuable tool that helps in restoring mobility independence. And while the use of canes for people who are blind goes back centuries ago, the white cane saw its introduction in the early 20th century, when canes were painted in white for better recognition. Typically, on White Cane Safety Day, the National Federation of the Blind, which is the oldest and largest organisation led by individuals who areRead More…

Pink October 2021

It’s that time of the year again… Pink October 2021 is finally with us! As you may already know, October is the month dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness, the month where across the world we remind each other about the impact of breast cancer on women. Breast cancer is the most common cancer site amongst women in Malta, having both the highest incidence rate as well as the highest mortality rate amongst all female cancer sites. While the main cause of breast cancer remains unknown to this day, there are risk factors which, when present, increase the chance of developing breast cancer. Risk factorsRead More…

back to school tips for mums

As we near the end of Summer, our minds as mothers naturally shift to the thought of our children going back to school. Needless to say, this might bring about a wave of anxiety – “Do I need to buy more uniforms? What about school shoes and socks? And we’ll definitely need backpacks, pencil cases, bottles and lunchboxes…oh lunches! What lunches are best for fussy eaters like my little one? Oh I really hope the kids settle down easily at school this year. That reminds me…there is still transport and who knows what else that I still need to think about…“ While such inner conflictRead More…

contraception myths

Whilst a lot of contraceptives and birth control methods are considered to be very effective in preventing pregnancy, there is also a lot of unfounded contraception misinformation out there that can hinder the associated prevention success rates. For this reason, we at wham thought of compiling a list of contraception myths along with the rationale for each, to prevent misinformation from leading towards unwanted surprises. Myth #1: “I’m breastfeeding, I cannot get pregnant”. Breastfeeding may prolong the return of your period. However, whilst there are women who experience months or even a year or two period-free whilst still breastfeeding, there are women who get theirRead More…

Women for Women Foundation

Back in November 2019, a group of women from the Women for Women (Malta) group on Facebook got together to set up the Women for Women Foundation. Through the Women for Women Social Fund, the Foundation supports women and their families through difficult times, helping them achieve financial independence through further education and training, all the while working hand in hand with experts in domestic violence, homelessness and mental health. The foundation liaises with companies and businesses that can support its work through product donations, reduction in prices of items and services needed and employment opportunities for women looking for work. Additionally, a lovely teamRead More…

breastfeeding

Lately a discussion arose on the Facebook group Women for Women (Malta) with regards to breastfeeding, where a woman claimed that while she is currently dealing with a separation, she discovered that breastfeeding her baby in court is not allowed. Other women confirmed that they had experienced the same situation, including a mother who had been chosen as a witness. She was not only denied permission to take her two month old breastfed baby with her, but also told that refusing to attend would cost her a hefty fine. It is absurd that in 2021 we are still denying basic needs to women and theirRead More…
