Slowing the signs of ageing
Our skin changes with age, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look younger. It’s just that sometimes the idea of ‘anti-ageing’ can be overwhelming and a little stressful. So instead of focusing on that, let’s focus on what you can do to keep your skin healthy and prevent premature skin ageing.
You’re never too young to embrace your skin and take good care of it. In the long run, this will help you put less pressure on yourself to slow down the ageing process. It’s true that we can’t stop the passage of time, but you do have control over how you age and what you can do is make small adjustments to your lifestyle, take extremely good care of your skin, and focus on adopting healthier habits and lifestyle choices. The way you choose to live also plays a significant role in having and maintaining healthy, glowing skin.
What happens to our skin when we age?
Our skin evolves over the course of our lifetime – some changes are caused by our ageing process. As we mature, our skin loses its elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles start to appear, and our skin will experience a drop in collagen. The skin ageing process can also be induced by external factors, including sun exposure, smoking, air pollution, stress, and alcohol consumption.
However, there’s so much that you can do to support your skin throughout the years. So how about making some positive changes in your life? Start small and give yourself time to adapt.
Be kind to your skin
First, understand what your skin needs. Consult with your skin professional, who can help you understand what products truly support the health of your skin. Your skin deserves to breathe, and committing to an appropriate skincare routine promotes the growth of new, healthy cells.
Avoid excess sun exposure, use SPF products, and wear sunscreen throughout the year (not just during summer). And always stay hydrated! Monitor your daily water intake and make sure to drink 6 to 8 cups every day.
Eat right
Remember that your diet supports your skin’s health at any age. The Mediterranean diet is known for its antioxidant-rich food. It has been ranked as the healthiest diet in 2022 for the 5th consecutive time. Eat more lean protein, healthy fats and more fruits and vegetables. Foods that are brimming with antioxidants include blueberries, broccoli, spinach, and walnuts. Stay away from sugar, saturated fats, and processed foods.
Get moving!
Exercising regularly improves your mood, sleep, skin & bone health. It also reduces the risk of certain diseases and significantly lowers stress. Allocate time during the week for a walk or a jog – or join an activity class in your area (or follow a class on YouTube).
Skincare Products
If you need to up your game, you can introduce products with ingredients that will help brighten your complexion and smooth the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. For instance, hyaluronic acid (HA) plumps up the skin when you’re most hydrated, improving and nourishing the skin on a surface level.
