My name is Maya Borg, I’m 20 years old and I am currently reading for a Bachelor’s degree in Sports, Exercise and Health at MCAST. Before choosing to study this degree, I was contemplating taking the career path of midwifery as I was always interested to learn more about the development and growth of the fetus during my time as a biology student. Since I enrolled in this degree of sports science, I realised how rewarding it would be to combine my two main interests; exercise and pregnancy health.
I was fortunate enough to be brought up with sports as being part of my daily routine which led to an ingrained mentality that exercise is crucial for self-development and a better quality of life. Throughout my childhood and early teens, I had the opportunity to practice a variety of sports including gymnastics, athletics, spring-board diving and even competed nationally in swimming. During the past four years, I have been working as a swimming teacher and began personal training this year during my second year degree.
During my academic years I’ve worked on numerous assignments that relate to exercise and pregnancy health, among which include the following two projects, “Nutritional Habits of Pregnant Women in Malta who are during their Second Trimester“ and “Exercise as a Preventive Measure for the Impact of Pregnancy on Lumbopelvic Pain among Maltese Mothers.”
After completing my undergraduate studies, I plan on broadening my studies and read for a Master’s in either exercise physiology or sports nutrition and weight management, with specialization in the field of pregnancy. I aspire to work towards including exercise as treatment for pregnant women and remove the misconception that exercise is harmful during pregnancy.
Other areas that interest me are guiding expecting mothers with the recommended pregnancy nutrition plan, caring and assessing for postural pregnancy change, ensuring adequate gestational weight gain, and helping achieve pre-pregnancy weight after pregnancy.
