Paulina Dembska

If you live in Malta, I am sure you have heard of the horrific femicide of Paulina Dembska. If you haven’t yet heard of it, Paulina, a 29-year-old polish woman, was sexually assualted and killed by a man, on 2nd January 2022 at the Independence Garden, in Sliema. This news shook the whole nation and even more so women. It especially deeply affected a lot of women, both physically and emotionally because women’s deepest fears, that is, of being harassed or harmed by a man, turned into reality and they realised that it could have easily been them, their female relative or their female friend.Read More…

elle-evate

Women For Women Foundation assists vulnerable women in social and financial crisis on a daily basis – women who are poor or sliding into poverty, who may be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, who suffer from health problems, who may be at risk of violence, who are young or expectant mothers, or who have suffered a sudden accident or loss, leaving them in crisis. As a voluntary organisation, an internal framework as well as increased human resources were required to process the increasing amount of daily requests for support. For this reason, in March 2021, Elle-Evate was launched – a 12 month projectRead More…

self employment

One of the most difficult things for a woman to do is keep up with her career and have children. Others decide that being an employee is not their thing and having their own business or extra income at the side is the way to go. For me it was all of the above. Having a son at the age of 32 was a very different experience from when I had my daughter at 18. Our parents were now elderly; having them babysit our son was not an option and he was not an easy child at all – tantrums galore, so we needed toRead More…

part time nursing students

Earlier on this week, MUMN chief Paul Pace claimed that an average of 3 nurses are quitting their jobs at Mater Dei Hospital every week. Burnout, stress, and lack of new recruits seem to be contributing towards the problem. Meanwhile, nursing students following a degree on part time basis have been discriminated for the past 4 years. I write this with a heavy heart in the name of all part time students whose desperate pleas have been ignored for the past 3 years by parliament ministers, committees and organisations. Four years ago the possibility of following a Nursing Degree on Part Time Day basis wasRead More…

it's okay not to be ok

Being diagnosed with social anxiety was one of the weirdest and unexpected things I have ever experienced. This is why… I have always been seen as a social butterfly. One who smiles at strangers. One who wins silly dance competitions during parties. One who communicates and compliments everyone who crosses her path. Meanwhile, another side of me always feared judgement. So despite the positive social approach I exhibited at times, I was still one who sat at the back of the class so other students would not mock her behind her back. One who would prefer to be in bed at 10pm watching a seriesRead More…

breast cancer vaccine

The very first human trial testing a vaccine against triple-negative breast cancer is set to begin. As we all regretfully know, breast cancer is one of the most common yet deadly cancers out there. At the time of writing, breast cancer may only be prevented through mastectomy (a surgical operation to remove a breast), as it doesn’t respond to hormone or targeted drug therapies. Yet just last week, the Cleveland Clinic – a medical centre in the US – announced that it’s launching a ‘first-of-its kind’ human trial testing a vaccine shot designed specifically to prevent triple-negative breast cancer. Up until now, developments in triple-negativeRead More…

Women for Women Foundation

Back in November 2019, a group of women from the Women for Women (Malta) group on Facebook got together to set up the Women for Women Foundation. Through the Women for Women Social Fund, the Foundation supports women and their families through difficult times, helping them achieve financial independence through further education and training, all the while working hand in hand with experts in domestic violence, homelessness and mental health. The foundation liaises with companies and businesses that can support its work through product donations, reduction in prices of items and services needed and employment opportunities for women looking for work. Additionally, a lovely teamRead More…

recurring miscarriages

They say 1 in every 4 women miscarry… I had never heard that before, until it happened to me. But when experiencing recurrent miscarriages, do you have to settle with considering yourself so unlucky that you will always be that 1 in every 4 women who will miscarry? That was what I was told when I had my first 2 miscarriages. I was so heartbroken, trying to figure out why this keeps on happening to me and what could I have done wrong. Thousands of questions in my head; questions you never get an answer to… You try to seek help from people who haveRead More…
