music speaks Ale's Project

Driving back home following our ritualistic visit to my parents, we put on Alessia’s favourite sound track – Shrek. Alessia must have been around 2 years old at the time. Those days I used to welcome with open arms the red traffic light command. This vibrant colour, that many of us loathe seeing while driving, during this period in my life offered me the time to listen to my own breathing, it was within these brief moments that I allowed myself to reach within and reflect on my current state of being. “And then I saw her face, I’m a believer… YAY!” came the cuteRead More…

teen's school related fears

During my childhood I always knew the expected amount of years I’d spend in school would be 6 years of primary school, 2 of middle school, 3 in secondary school and then, depending what you choose, two more years of post-secondary school, followed by University. I have just turned 13 and am about to start attending Secondary School, but I don’t feel as excited as I did when I was 10 years old, especially since I practically missed 2 years of school. When COVID-19 hit us, I started studying from home. During that year (which for me was Year 7) we had online classes throughRead More…

back to school tips for mums

As we near the end of Summer, our minds as mothers naturally shift to the thought of our children going back to school. Needless to say, this might bring about a wave of anxiety – “Do I need to buy more uniforms? What about school shoes and socks? And we’ll definitely need backpacks, pencil cases, bottles and lunchboxes…oh lunches! What lunches are best for fussy eaters like my little one? Oh I really hope the kids settle down easily at school this year. That reminds me…there is still transport and who knows what else that I still need to think about…“ While such inner conflictRead More…

Women for Women Foundation

Back in November 2019, a group of women from the Women for Women (Malta) group on Facebook got together to set up the Women for Women Foundation. Through the Women for Women Social Fund, the Foundation supports women and their families through difficult times, helping them achieve financial independence through further education and training, all the while working hand in hand with experts in domestic violence, homelessness and mental health. The foundation liaises with companies and businesses that can support its work through product donations, reduction in prices of items and services needed and employment opportunities for women looking for work. Additionally, a lovely teamRead More…

Nursing Student Claire Galea

It’s ironic that just over three years ago, if you asked me what I wanted to do with my life I would have answered “I honestly don’t know”. And while this is an understandable answer coming from a teen, at 36 years old it wasn’t so much. Having married at 18 years old and then going on to raising 3 daughters in the following two decades meant that I got sidetracked. I always loved and valued education; always hoped that eventually I could find time to go back to studying, but it seemed like it was never the right time for me to do so.Read More…

mental illness

It is no secret that in Malta, public discussion about mental health (like many other topics that concern the well-being and fair treatment of others and our environment) is left wanting. Whilst there has been a general improvement in the discussion, and there have been an increasing number of educational campaigns occurring by non-profits such as the Richmond Foundation and media houses such as FreeHour, this is only the start. There is still a sense of shame and insensitivity that surrounds the topic of mental health and mental illness, and they need to be addressed as root causes of mental health stigma. One event displayingRead More…

Maltese stuck in UK

Many Maltese citizens stuck in the UK are very annoyed and angry with the Maltese authorities because they have been told that they need to ask for permission to be allowed to visit their families in Malta unless they have all been vaccinated, especially since they now know that Covid numbers in Malta are up to 96 and these, we are told, are all due to unvaccinated tourists mostly students. So, these students were allowed to enter Malta without a vaccine certificate. Meanwhile in the UK numerous young Maltese children who go to school there and have finished school are being told they have to waitRead More…

Loranne Briffa

My journey from overweight to athlete started around five years ago. Those who know me as a young teenager know a different version of me which I feel does not exist anymore. A shy, chubby girl whom thought her abilities were not much. I spent most of my twenties and early thirties yoyo dieting and trying different kind of sports but none of which made me feel any happy or comfortable with myself as bodybuilding and fitness. Throughout these years however I never stopped working on my inner self to change my weak points and embracing myself to become more positive. Once I was confidentRead More…

pride 2021

Pride month is an entire month dedicated to celebrating LGBT+ rights, activism, and culture. Due to the COVID pandemic, Pride 2021 events have been cancelled or scaled down in many countries. However, this was not an obstacle to advocate for the rights of the LGBT+ community across the world. June 2019: ‘Two women, Melania Geymonat and her partner Chris say they were subjected to a homophobic attack and left covered in blood on the top deck of a London night bus as they were travelling to Camden Town’. BBC News October 2020: ‘30 transgender or gender non-conforming people have now been fatally shot or killedRead More…
